In 1966, Ford stunned the racing world when three GT40 Mk.ii race cars outpaced cars from Porsche, Alpine, and Ferrari to sweep the podium at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans.
This June, 50 years after the historic performance, Ford will return to the classic endurance race to do fight for supremacy against the GT establishment. The announcement was made yesterday, as race organizer, ACO (Automobile Club de l'Ouest), confirmed acceptance of all for Ford GT entries into the GTE Pro class. The cars will carry numbers 66, 67, 68, and 69.
“It was great to see all four Ford GTs up there on the Le Mans entry list today,” said Dave Pericak, Ford Performance global director, who attended this afternoon’s press conference in Paris. “Newcomers are by no means guaranteed an entry, whatever their history or ambitions, so we thank the ACO for giving Ford the opportunity for a four car assault in June.”
The 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans will take place on June 18 and 19
